THE CLADDAGH RING, THE SYMBOL OF SYMBOLISM
When you are interested in collecting jewelry there is a wide range of different types of jewelry to point your interest at. There are some pieces of jewelry that have a special meaning to the owner or have a specific story which makes the piece a must have in your collection. One of these must have pieces is the very famous Claddagh Ring.
The Claddagh Ring is a very special ring which is often used as the ultimate symbol of love, friendship and/or loyalty. Knowing its symbolism the Claddagh Ring is the perfect gift for best friends and of course it would do well as a wedding ring. The design of the Claddagh Ring is a heart which is held by two hands and on the top of the heart a little crown gives it kind of a royal glow. The ring is available in all kinds of different materials such as silver, gold, platinum and titanium.
The story of the Claddagh ring tells of an Irish young man who, was on his way to the Irish Caribbean Island Montserrat when he was kidnapped by pirates and sold to a Moorish goldsmith. During his stay at the Moorish goldsmith he learned how to become a very good craftsman. Back in Ireland a very worried lady was waiting for him to come home and when he finally did he got on one knee and proposed to her while he was holding the ring. They got married and never parted again. He explained to his new wife that the hands of the ring was a symbol of their everlasting friendship, the heart on the ring was a symbol of their eternal love for each other and the crown was a symbol of their undying fidelity and loyalty to each other. The ring therefore captures three very important vows all in one piece. Although the story goes back all the way into the 17th century, it seems the original design is even much older and was originally meant to be an original symbol for the Galway town of Claddagh in Ireland.
Other than the symbolism of appreciation or love for another person the Claddagh Ring also does a very good job on letting someone know whether or not the wearer is romantically available? It is the way the ring is worn that sends out the message. When worn on the right hand with the heart turned away from you it implies that you’re not romantically involved and when the ring is turned the other way around it says that you are romantically involved. When worn on the left hand with the heart turned away from you it implies that you are engaged and when the ring is turned the other way around it says that you're happily married.
The stars of Hollywood have a weakness for the Claddagh Ring and are often captured in pictures wearing the ring. Next to the people of Hollywood liking the ring, also the ring has been on many fingers in motion pictures. In the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer the ring has even been a plot device for several times.
